Making contacts is the most important part of working in the media. For the most part, it is a business where the people involved are always looking to make the next jump to the next job.
You can be Al Michaels behind the microphone or Martin Scorsese with a camera but if you don’t know the right people, you won’t get a job.
Jeremiah Johnson is proof of this theory. Here’s a man who worked in a small market like Terre Haute and made the jump to Indianapolis. That is a big jump for someone who had only been out of college for only a handful of years. It is a big jump for someone, in my opinion, who lacks the on air talent of a personality that works in a large market like Indy. My boss in Ft. Wayne, Tommy Shoegler, has twice the camera presence that Mr. Johnson has, and Ft. Wayne is market 107.
But while in Terre Haute, he made connections in Indy that helped him land his next job.
I admired the humble nature of this guest. Here is a man who brought in a plethora of rejection letters to show to a bunch of strangers. It’s funny because he was making a first impression on all of us, and normally you would think of showing something you might be proud of. Maybe an award winning package or newscast. He didn’t. He showed the realism of what happened to him when he got out of college. It’s useful for us to see that as students because that may be a situation we encounter ourselves when we graduate. He is really the first guest we have had that has shown us the dark side of the business at its early stages.
Mr. Johnson proves the theory that it’s better to be lucky than good. It’s very lucky that he is working in such a great market in such a short amount of time. I don’t think that is a realistic possibility for most of us that sit in that class. I think its very cool that he was in the seats we sit in only 8 years ago or so. I hope to rise through the ranks the way he has, and I’ll definitely need to have a little luck to do that. Mr. Johnson proves that hard work breeds good luck.
I hope to do the same.
